MINERALS Bauxite is the most important aluminium ore. Barytes mMineral consists largely of the minerals gibbsite Al(OH)3, boehmite γ-AlO(OH), and diaspore α-AlO(OH), together with the iron oxides goethite and hematite, the clay mineral kaolinite and small amounts of anatase TiO2. Barytes mineral was named after the village Les Baux in southern France, where it was first discovered in 1821 by the geologist Pierre Berthier. The bauxite aluminium ore is used in diverse industry as a raw material for extraction and refinement of aluminum. The aluminum in bauxite is bound up in different minerals: gibbsite: Al (OH) 3; boehmite: AlO (OH) and diaspore: AlOOH. Barytes mineral(or barite) is the naturally occurring mineral form of barium sulphate.The main properties of barytes mineral are its high specific gravity (4.5), very low solubility; it is non-toxic, and also chemically and physically unreactive. Applications Factors affecting demand General Oil industry (77%) Chemical - electronics, TV screen, glass, ceramics and medical applications (barium meals) (15%) Fillers - car, rubber and paint industry, radiation shielding (8%) Growing demand for oil drilling and filler applications. Chemical demand static due to increase in LCD/plasma TV screens. 75% European domestic production for added-value sectors – overall the chemical and filler industries account for half of the barytes consumption. In the USA over 90% is for the oil industry. China is 50% of world production; with India, USA, Morocco and Mexico a further 30%. Barytes is an environmentally friendly material as it is a natural product and not manufactured; and not subject to registration under the new EU REACH regulations. Substitution potential exists but the alternates in the oil industry (eg ilmenite, haematite) are economically less attractive. Cheaper alternate ground limestone or clays are sometimes used on economy grounds in some filler applications where quality or technical considerations are less stringent.
